Experiences: The Guide To Streetwear Shopping In Vancouver
Our favourite stores for streetwear shopping In Vancouver.
Written by Zayyar Win Thein.
On a recent 48-hour trip to Vancouver that wasn't really a "required" part of a 5 week long North American journey I found myself wondering "What the fuck am I going to do in Vancouver?". Fortunately enough the Internet, more specifically social media is a small world and I was quickly conversing with a mutual Instagram friend who lived in Vancouver and was willing to take me around.
Over the course of two days my new friend Kyle showed me what the city of Vancouver had to offer, from a local family run kebab shop for lunch to the menswear mecca heaven, I quickly learnt why Vancouver is such a hot spot for retail.
Our Experiences series is a deeper look at a place, environment, event or similar where we aim to provide context and insight.
One of the first locations we visited was Haven, the store needs no introduction as its extensive brand range from Visvim, Neighbourhood, Cav Empt, Undercover, NikeLab, Acronym - does all the talking. The store itself was warm, you’re greeted with a beautiful interior made primarily of polished light wood flooring, orange brick walls and black metal furnishings and fittings such as the railing. With incense burning in the background and soft music the shopping experience is welcoming.

I personally have been following Haven for some years and have made a few online purchases, their excellent service online is the same in-store with knowledgeable and kind staff. If you’re particularly interested in styles such as techwear, Japanese labels and very high quality production then Haven is the place for you, their brand mix is carefully curated for the modern day.

Next up on our list is Neighbour. With two locations (one for men, one for women) and a diverse brand selection, they have their own niche very much like Haven has for Japanese brands, Neighbour takes their place within minimalistic Scandinavian style. Importing labels such as Our Legacy, Norse Projects, Cmmn Swdn and Needles these boast well made garments suiting someone who is in the creative industry or a smart casual dresser.

Words such as curated and soft come to mind when describing Neighbour, they want to tell the stories that these brands have to offer and house them in one unique point of view. Be sure to checkout their beautiful online shopping experience if you can’t make it in-store.

In my personal opinion, Roden Gray is one of the best menswear stores in North America. Roden Gray can be argued as a blended mix of the finest ingredients that result in your favourite dish. It offers the widest range of styles appealing to a varied customer base whether they are into high end, streetwear, skating or all the above. From niche t-shirt labels such as Know Wave through to Thom Browne and 1017 Alyx 9SM (formerly Alyx Studios) there is something for everyone who is quite simply interested in clothes. All of this sits in a beautifully designed interior made from light wood, set white brick walls, bright LED lighting and industrial aluminium piping for railing.

The real luxury of Vancouver is that the best shopping is all located within walking distance from each other, the neighbourhood of Gastown was the original settlement which became Vancouver in 1886. With original brick laid streets, historical lighting and the famous Gastown Steam Clock it is quite a contrast that the oldest part of the city houses the cities trendiest fashion, contemporary furniture and modern cafes - make sure you don’t miss out if you ever get to Vancouver.
